Life & Career Milestones

I've taken a lot of twists and turns

  • 1.

I was diagnosed with my auditory processing disorder when I was in second grade.

  • 2.

After that, I moved from school to school, trying to find one with resources that could help me.

  • 3.

When I graduated from college, I had no clue what to do. I thought maybe I'd become a lawyer.

  • 4.

I had four different jobs after college, varying from lobbying for big oil, to being a wine barista.

  • 5.

I'd wanted to join the Peace Corps since I was in high school, and in 2010, I finally joined.

  • 6.

I was assigned to the one country I'd been wary of: Rwanda. It pushed me way out of my comfort zone.

  • 7.

I taught nutrition lessons to my rural village; no one had been trained to eat raw, healthy foods.

  • 8.

I started The Women's Bakery to bring nutrition, education, and empowerment to the women of Rwanda.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

You're dumb, slow, and unable. You won't make it through high school.

  • How I responded:

Not only have I graduated from high school, but I'm enrolled in a master's program, I've started two businesses, and speak multiple languages. I still struggle with some of those terms, but what helps me filter them out is having people around me who love and support me. That can be family, teachers, friends - anyone who believes in your abilities and celebrates them. It's hard to teach someone how to find their self-worth, but you can find it within yourself with the help of your advocates.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • Being diagnosed with an auditory processing disorder made people believe that I was "unable," when really, I just needed more time to complete tasks. Finding teachers and resources that would afford me that time and support was the key to my success.
