How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Teachers:
You're just not going to get this. This is just beyond you.
How I responded:
When people with learning disabilities have big aspirations, people kick them down. I didn't take it as discouragement but a fundamental misunderstanding. A quote that I often say is, "There's going to be chaos, but you have to protect your mind from that." I've learned that if someone says something malicious, it isn't necessarily towards you; they are projecting their insecurities and struggles onto you, so don't take it personally. You never want to engage insecurity with more insecurity.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I couldn't read until 3rd grade; I was in special education, dyslexic, and had a speech impediment. I didn't think anything in the academic world was possible, until I realized it's something I could excel in.
I was born in an extremely dangerous city, San Bernardino, California, where gangs/drugs were prevalent. I then moved to Texas, where we lived in poverty and relied on food stamps and welfare. I had to get over the hurdles of my environment and mind.
