I've taken a lot of twists and turns
1.
First job out of college required relocating somewhere totally new and unfamiliar in a field I wasn't sure if I was interested in, but this gave me a good foundation to work within higher education.
2.
I have the AHA moment of what I want to go back to school for. I finally figured out how to align my interests and experiences in a field I find interesting.
3.
After working within higher education, I then realized this was not quite the field for me. Now what?
4.
I get into grad school and complete the 2-year program while working full-time. Taking on small, internal projects relevant to my degree helped me build my resume for future jobs.
5.
I job hop to another non-profit where the people are great but there is no room for growth.
6.
I graduated! And then spent months interviewing with nothing coming from it. Cue endless frustrations and me thinking my degree was not worth what I thought it was.
7.
I job hop again to another, bigger non-profit where there is more opportunity but this organizations face a lot of internal struggles which made my job very difficult.
8.
After 9 months, I land my dream job and begin working within a field I love!
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
Not qualified for advanced level positions due to obtaining my Master's degree, overqualified for entry level positions due to the same reason, and my "unique background" was not what most organizations would look for
How I responded:
Believe in yourself! Take a hard look at your experience and pinpoint a skillset that you can bring to any organization. Although I had an atypical background, I was able to prove that my experiences and skillsets would be an asset to an organization which ultimately landed me a job in the field I wanted.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
Grad school is expensive! Look for any grants and scholarships offered locally of through the school you plan on attending. I finished my degree while working so I was fortunate to have a steady income, but I do have quite a bit of debt.
