Life & Career Milestones

My path in life took a while to figure out

  • 1.

I grew up in a small, tightknit community, and until middle school, I was very shy.

  • 2.

I started to come into my own in high school; part of that was tied to my job at Taco Bell.

  • 3.

Harnessing that confidence meant I finally felt comfortable coming out as a gay man.

  • 4.

I also felt confident enough to become the first in my family to apply for college in the U.S.

  • 5.

Being awarded my diploma in front of my hard-working mother was one of my proudest moments.

  • 6.

I’ve loved writing since I was young, and my teachers always told me I had a talent for it.

  • 7.

I always wanted to find a career that would revolve around writing and my love of storytelling.

  • 8.

My current role lets me write while also exploring my interests in PR, media, and advertising.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

Aside from being a first-generation college student navigating through affording college and learning the system, the real “noise” arrived after graduation – I was laid off my second official job after college.

  • How I responded:

Shortly after college, I was laid off. It was terrifying: I was unemployed for almost two months, and I thought I’d never find another job, that I’d have to leave Los Angeles and move back in with my parents. But I didn’t get paralyzed; I just kept putting myself out there, and that was key. You can’t let yourself be scared into inaction—you have to keep going. If you don’t live through difficult moments, then you’re not really living—no one successful has had a perfect route.
