Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

You're not exactly the Marine Corps type. Math isn't your strong suit. You're not a natural salesperson. You're shy. You're not strategic enough. You don't understand business.

  • How I responded:

You have to be an advocate for yourself. It's completely ok to say: "I disagree." You're not a natural salesperson: "I disagree" You're shy: "I disagree. Sometimes I am, sometimes I'm not." You're not strategic enough: "I'm not sure I agree with you. Do you have concrete examples?" Math isn't your strong suit: "I disagree."

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I thought I would get out and find a job right away. What really happened was a winding road of education, mistakes, internships, multiple jobs and hardship. I learned to never give up. With a little more confidence, I would have shortened the path.
