I've taken a lot of twists and turns
1.
First I had to learn how to cope. I have ADD. I am all over the place, so I learned all by myself.
2.
In middle & high school I had a great English teacher who knew I could write well. He mentored me.
3.
I worked as a volunteer which to this day I still do, I believe it is one of the best things to do.
4.
I worked in Oncology. I learned so much from people with cancer and how important every day is.
5.
I married, my husband died young. I had to nurture 3 children with no help, we were suddenly poor.
6.
I worked hard at getting a higher paying job, I took classes, kids grew up, I spread my wings.
7.
My wings broke, breast cancer happened, I swore I would always help others. My blog has won awards.
8.
Then I got published in magazines. I got speaking engagements, I started a business & fell in love.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Parents:
You start things and never finish them" - well yeah I had ADD and no one got that. "You are flighty" was another good one. "Why would you want to do that?" when I wanted to pursue music over nursing.
How I responded:
I had undiagnosed ADD and no Dr Google then. I would say that if you think something is different with you find out what it is, deal with it, and go outside your family to do so if you are not getting their support. A teacher, a coach, a mentor, a pastor, a rabbi, whomever - there is always someone out there who will listen to you and give you support. Parents can be hard on you, I know that first hand. Just be careful whom you share with, sometimes your peers aren't the best 1st choice.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
When my husband died the good salary was gone. Who plans to lose a spouse at 42? I almost went bankrupt but then I talked to someone in the know financially. I learned to pay myself first. I learned the importance of financial security.
I am absolutely very smart but not on paper. I had difficulty concentrating. I did not have parental support but eventually I learned to focus, to cope, to concentrate, to remember important things. I trained my brain, to this day I still train it.
I can't tell you strongly enough how important your health is. You only get one body. Can certain parts/organs be replaced, yes. However your life is eternally changed afterwards. If you feel something is not right, get it checked. Be in control.
