Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Family:

You should become successful and earn a lot of money to support yourself. You should go into the medical field and become a nurse or a physician.

  • How I responded:

I learned to meet/talk with other people and gain different perspectives on what they did to define their own story of being "successful." Being in a traditional Filipino family, I was expected to immediately go into the medical field because it was the only profession that you can go into to earn money and be "happy." I wanted to break that tradition and show myself and others that not all Filipinos should be nurses and doctors. I felt Filipinos can make a difference in other career paths.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I had issues with drug use in high school during my senior year and first of college. I overcame it by meeting positive influential people and leaving those who misguided me.
